Football News for Sports Fans Spicy

What is the Alliance of American Football?

Football is back! Although it is not the NFL, the AAF is on a quest to solidify themselves as a compliment to the professional league.

Rejoice NFL fans! There is no reason to mope around because there is no meaning to the weekend anymore, the AAF is here. The Alliance of American Football is only three weeks old and is already making waves.

What is the AAF?

Announced back in March by former NFL executive’s Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian, the eight-team league is designed to be a compliment to the professional league during the off-season. This is important to note because that is how similar leagues have failed. The fact that this league has support from the “big boys” will assist in its longevity.

This league will also provide guys with the opportunity showcase their talent and development to NFL teams. Most of the rosters feature players who made it to the big leagues but couldn’t stay there. They used a QB Draft to allow each of the eight teams an opportunity to either protect allocated quarterbacks or pick one from another region.

Who are the teams:

A list of the eight inaugural teams is below and Sports Salsa has taken the liberty of picking out the most notable players from each team:

• Arizona Hotshots – QB Trevor Knight
• Atlanta Legends – QB Aaron Murray, QB Matt Simms, WR Stephen Hill
• Birmingham Iron – QB Blake Sims, QB Scott Tolzien, RB Trent Richardson, CB JaCorey Shepherd, K Nick Novak
• Memphis Express – QB Christian Hackenberg, QB Zach Mettenberger, RB Zac Stacy, WR Chris Givens
• Orlando Apollos – QB Garrett Gilbert, QB Stephen Morris, WR Frankie Hammond, DB Will Hill
• Salt Lake Stallions – QB B.J. Daniels, QB Garrett Grayson, RB Matt Asiata
• San Antonio Commanders – RB David Cobb, RB Daryl Richardson
• San Diego Fleet – QB Josh Johnson, RB Bishop Sankey

Where can I watch:

Something the AAF has going for them, is their broadcasting partnerships with CBS, NFL network, and Bleacher Report. CBS Sports Network will then carry one AAF game each week throughout the season. There will be four games every weekend for 10 weeks, two games played on Saturday and two games played on Sunday.

So far critics of the league have commented on its competitiveness transparency of officiating. There are certainly a few things that fans would love to see translated over to the big leagues and the NFL is taking note.

Looking forward to this weekend’s slate features four games and two teams attempting to stay undefeated. The Birmingham Iron and Orlando Apollos have already established themselves as forces in the league. Tune in this weekend to watch as this league continues to make strides towards legitimacy.
