NCAA March Madness, and the teams that participate in it, is getting to a tipping point. Only 68 teams get a chance to win a national championship, so every game played between now and when the selection committee makes its final determinations on Sunday, March 17, 2019.
The tournament started in 1939. Oregon claimed the crown then. UCLA leads all schools with 11 championships, followed by Kentucky with 8, North Carolina with 6, and Duke and Indiana with 5. Other schools with multiple titles include Connecticut, Kansas, Villanova, Cincinnati, Florida, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State and San Francisco. 20 schools have won single championships. You can view a year-by-year list of winners here.
