September 21-24, 2018

There are plenty of interesting matchups this week, though we think the schedule is light with “must-see” designations. We think it is a particularly good week for those who pay attention to point spreads.

1. #22 Texas A&M at #1 Alabama

Saturday, Sept. 22, 3:30 pm ET

TV: CBS
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 191 (Texas A&M), 190 (Alabama); TuneIn Premium

Alabama unleashed its fury against Mississippi last week, a team that had defeated the Crimson Tide a couple of times in recent years. While returning to the comfortable confines of Bryant–Denny Stadium for this week’s game, did they save enough in the tank for a game that Aggies’ coach Jimbo Fisher has had marked on his calendar since taking the position?

2. #7 Stanford at #20 Oregon

Saturday, Sept. 22, 8 pm ET

TV: ABC
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 197 (Stanford), 84 (Oregon); TuneIn Premium

The Pac-12 needs a strong team to emerge to have a chance at a national championship. These two teams, and Washington, seem to be leading the charge. With UCLA and USC struggling mightily, this game could create a path for one of these two teams to take the mantle.

3. Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians

Friday-Sunday, Sept. 21-23. Check times.

TV: MLB-TV. Sunday night, ESPN 7 pm ET.
(If NFL Conflict) AM-FM Radio: Westwood One (Find affiliate near you)
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 177 (Boston),  178 (Cleveland); TuneIn Premium

Both teams long ago clinched their division crowns and there’s perhaps not much to play for except pride. But for fans, this could be a preview of an ALDS / ALCS series in October.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Monday, Sept. 24, 8:15 pm ET

TV: ESPN
AM-FM Radio: Westwood One (Find affiliate near you)
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 226 (Pittsburgh), 225 (Tampa Bay); TuneIn Premium

The equivalent of a football/boxing match against Kansas City may have left the Steelers woozy, particularly after suffering a tie with Cleveland in the first game of the season. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is 2-0, including manhandling the Super Bowl champion Eagles last week. Ryan Fitzpatrick is showing bling on and off the field. Could the Steelers actually end up 0-2-1 after this game?

5. New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons

Sunday, Sept. 23, 1 pm ET

TV: FOX
AM-FM Radio: Westwood One (Find affiliate near you)
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 388 (New Orleans), 225 (Atlanta); TuneIn Premium

Control of the NFC South is at stake, particularly if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers keep the foot to the floor. Both teams are, like the Panthers, 1-1. A victory is an important step on the road to the playoffs.

6. Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, Sept. 23, 4:05 pm

TV: CBS
AM-FM Radio: Westwood One (Find affiliate near you)
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 382 (Chargers) 227 (Rams); TuneIn Premium

This statement is a first: there is an important game between two Los Angeles football teams this weekend! The Rams are looking like Super Bowl contenders and the Chargers are attracting a lot of praise from pundits that expect them to take charge of the AFC West. However, a loss would put the Chargers at 1-2, putting the odds against them getting to the playoffs.

7. Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

Friday-Sunday, Sept. 21-23. Check times.

TV: MLB-TV. FOX, Saturday, 1:05 pm ET
Subscription Radio: SiriusXM 860 (Philadelphia), 187 (Atlanta); TuneIn Premium

The Phillies trail the Braves by 5.5 games in the division and are 5 games out of a wild card berth, so they want a sweep to get back into contention. The Braves trails the Cubs by 5 games for best record in the league and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. A lot is on the line. Will one of these teams make a statement with this series?

Other Story-lines to watch this weekend:

  • Carson Wentz is back under center this week. Will he lead the Eagles to a bounce back victory over the Indianapolis Colts?
  • After the Chiefs dominate performance over the Steelers last week, is there anything left for a tilt with the 49ers in Santa Clara? Playing on the road certainly did not phase Kansas City last week.
  • Mississippi State and Kentucky are both 3-0. Will the #14 Bulldogs be able to leave Lexington with an unblemished record?
  • Texas stood up to #22 USC last week. Now, #17 TCU comes calling. Can the Aggies reclaim some Texas pride?
  • Arizona State travels to #10 Washington after losing to San Diego State last week. Can Herm Edwards get the Sun Devils back to a level to compete with the Huskies this week?
  • Not many would have predicted that Kansas and Baylor would both be 2-1 for their meeting this weekend. Baylor has home field. Will the Bears bring down the Jayhawks from their high flight?
  • The Cubs and White Sox play each other in a weekend series. We predict high hot dog and beer sales.
  • On paper, #2 Georgia should stomp the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, MO. We have a feeling this game could be tighter.
  • #19 Michigan hosts Nebraska, which went to 0-2 after losing to Troy last week. Can new Nebraska coach Scott Frost, who many thought would be a savior to the program, keep this game competitive?
